Toulouse: the Purpan hospital soon to be heated by the Mirail heating network
Work is underway to connect the Purpan University Hospital in Toulouse to the Mirail heating network. The heat produced by the incineration of household waste or by the Montaudran supercomputer supplies nearly 40,000 homes in the metropolis. It’s good for the economy and the environment.
Did you know that nearly 40,000 homes in the metropolis are heated and supplied with domestic hot water (or in the process of being) by heat recovery networks from the incineration of waste at Mirail or supercomputers at Montaudran ? Work is underway to connect the Purpan CHU to the Mirail district heating network. This one, which dates from the 1970s, is more than 40 km long, with 19,000 equivalent homes connected and 164 GWh of heat delivered each year. It avoids the emission of 43,000 tonnes of CO2 per year. It is environmentally, economically (with an attractive energy price) and social (eco-network label of Amorce since 2013) virtuous. Bagatelle et la Faourette (1,800 housing units) and the Cartoucherie eco-district (2,000 housing) have been connected to it since 2017.
Cold too
It is also the first cooling network in France supplied 100% by energy recovery from the incineration of waste from the incineration plant, with delivery of 1.7 GWh of cooling. This network is managed by the company Eneriance (public service delegation until 2025).
There is also a network in Blagnac, managed by Blagnac Énergies Vertes (Veolia group, public service delegation until 2037), supplied by deep geothermal energy (Ritouret well at 1,500 m). It stretches over 4 km and serves 2,500 accommodation units, the airport, the swimming pool and the Guillaumet gymnasium. A biomass (wood) boiler room was created in addition to geothermal energy.
Montaudran and the Grand Matabiau
The Plaine Campus network, managed by Toulouse Énergie Durable, in the south-east, commissioned in 2019, will eventually extend over 35 km and serve 10,000 housing equivalents, with the Rangueil hospital, the ZACs of ‘Empalot, Toulouse Aérospace and Malepère, thanks to the recovery of heat from supercomputers at the Espace Clément Ader research center (Dalkia group, public service delegation until 2045).
The future district of Grand Matabiau quais d’Oc (2,500 homes, offices and shops) will also be supplied by another heating network.
