While it has been overlooking the Christmas market again for a few days, the Capitol has regained (a little) its splendor! After almost two years of work and an incessant ballet of scaffolding, the work of the main facade, beginning in January 2020, ended at the end of November 2021. Listed as a Historic Monument, the Town Hall of Toulouse had not experienced such a construction campaign … for over 30 years.
A year late, from unforeseen to unforeseen
This large-scale project, which consisted in restoring luster to a building “weakened by runoff and wear of time, in order to restore it to its original beauty, ”should have ended a year ago, in November 2020. Slowly slowed down by the three confinements and the health crisis, it was quite late. Especially since the work had been revealed “More serious damage than expected”, discoveries during the works by the company Chevrin Gély, in charge of the site, at the level of empowerment on which is inscribed “Capitolium”, or eight columns in Caunes marble.
Three years later, the drain oil from the yellow vests has disappeared
This work should also make it possible to erase the last scars of violence which had punctuated the demonstrations of yellow vests in the Pink City. While some markers, inscriptions and other damage had been cleaned quickly, the storefront had also been targeted, in January 2019, by jets of drain oil.
The protesters had used hardeners, like resins, which had made these black stains around the clock very difficult to remove without altering the stone … change the bricks. But after months of work, they finally managed to “remove the stains of used oil, thanks to micro-sanding and whitewash operations”, explains one at the Capitol. Today these traces have totally disappeared.
Representative works… rue du Weight de l’Huile
But if the scaffolding has been removed from the central pavilion of the Capitol, the overall site is not over yet … to extend the works to the side façades. At the end of this operation, therefore, only one facade will not have been rehabilitated: the one facing the Square Charles-de-Gaulle.
The repair site will now concern rue du Weight de l’Huile, where scaffolding is being installed until the end of the year celebrations. Work is due to start there in early January, to end in April 2022.
It was only after this date that he tackled the side facade, located Lafayette Street. A facelift planned from May to October 2022. Except umpteenth hazard.
