Design project from Zurich for the Saint-Louis-Park in Basel
The planned Saint-Louis-Park in Basel’s Volta Nord development area is getting a face. According to the responsible urban planners, the “Mosaik” project by the Zurich landscape architects “Skala Landschaft Stadt Raum” creates a good connection between recreational and natural spaces.
The design project was presented on Monday at a vernissage in the Elys culture and commercial building in the new quarter in the north of Basel. It emerged victorious from an anonymous design competition to which 21 projects had been submitted
The future park in the newly emerging Volta Nord district will stretch over an area of 22,000 square meters along the railroad tracks. According to the specifications of the urban planners, it should serve the population as a place to stay, play and relax, and on the other hand offer nature space for development and serve to network living spaces.
The building and transport department announced on Monday that the winning project met the requirements best. They offer a variety of uses such as a play area with a walk-in fountain.
On the other hand, the project takes up options for action in connection with climate change with suggestions for improving the microclimate: Among other things, the rainwater that accumulates is to be used optimally.
Furthermore, the project takes into account aspects for a smooth cooperation between the residents and the users of the open space. It is said that more intensive and potentially noisy uses would be placed at a reasonable distance from the residential properties. The nature conservation areas planned in the west are also well separated from the heavily used play and recreation areas.
