On Monday, November 29, 2021, the Austrian Federal Minister for the EU and the Constitution, Karoline Edtstadler, was in Liechtenstein. The occasion for the visit was a working meeting with Foreign Minister Dominique Hasler and Justice Minister Graziella Demokratie-Wachter.
As part of their conversation, Government Councilor Hasler and Federal Minister Edtstadler exchange ideas about the European policy of the two neighboring countries. In this context, the Government Councilor emphasizes the importance of Liechtenstein’s participation in the EU internal market: “The EEA Agreement is a success story for Liechtenstein and has also proven itself in recent times”. Through the EEA there is free market access to the 27 EU member states and around 450 million people. By far the largest part of Liechtenstein’s goods exports went to Europe in 2020.
However, European cooperation is also associated with certain challenges. In particular, the ministers discussed the issue of social security for cross-border commuters who work in the home office due to the pandemic. In addition, other European policy issues such as the debate on the rule of law and the migration crisis at the EU’s external border were discussed.
The subject of “hate online” was discussed in the course of the working meeting between Government Councilor Moroccan-Wachter and Federal Minister Edtstadler. Hate comments on the Internet are also an issue in Liechtenstein that has worsened during the Covid 19 pandemic. These statements can fulfill various criminal offenses and trigger civil and media law claims. There was agreement that the Internet is not a legal vacuum, but that the rule of law is gilded here as well.
Federal Minister Edtstadler paid a courtesy visit to Prime Minister Daniel Risch between the two working meetings. The program was rounded off by a visit to Kaiser AG in Schaanwald.
