In Norway, 23 percent of respondents in a survey say they have felt lonely at Christmas. In Denmark, the corresponding high is 14 percent.
It shows a new Scandinavian survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Gavefabrikken.
A total of 16 percent black that they actually dread the holiday. In Sweden, 13 percent answer that they dread Christmas, while the corresponding high for Denmark is 12 percent.
Thomas Hansen, researcher at Oslo Met and the National Institute of Public Health, says loneliness is a relative phenomenon, which is very much affected by how we expect ourselves and those around us to feel.
– In times where we experience everyone else as happy, such as at Christmas, and where we do not meet the social needs which is a distinct phenomenon during the holidays, this is in contrast to how we are expected to feel. Then we know extra about negative emotions, he says.
