Snow in Salzburg: The coming week will also be wintery
Just in time for Advent, it is snowing in Salzburg. The early winter weather continues at the beginning of the week. It gets milder in the middle of the week.
Central Europe is under the constant influence of low pressure. This now leads to snow in almost all of Austria right on time for the first Advent. Salzburg has been covered in snow since Friday and again on Sunday there was snow in many parts of the country. “We measure most of the snow at the Sonnblick,” says Liliane Hofer, meteorologist at the Central Institute for Meteorology and Geodynamics in Salzburg (ZAMG). There were 37 centimeters of snow there on Sunday morning. There is also a lot of snow in Krimml with 22 centimeters and in St. Johann im Pongau with 16 centimeters. In the city of Salzburg there was little snow with five centimeters on Sunday.
Even at the beginning of the week, cool air masses of arctic origin continue to pour into the country. “Especially in the northern Alps, you have to reckon with winter conditions,” says Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist at the severe weather center. For Salzburg this means that it will continue to snow, says meteorologist Liliane Hofer. “On Monday, the focus will shift to the low-level areas, also in the direction of Loferer Steinberge and Gosaukamm. There will be most of the snow there.” Snow showers are expected in the rest of the state. Only in Lungau will it stay dry.
Snow for skiing should also be available, even if it is likely to be frosty. “In the mountains there is a very lively wind on Monday. On Tuesday it will occasionally become a strong wind.” On Tuesday it will continue to snow at higher altitudes and rain at lower altitudes. In the evening the snow line rises at 800 meters.
Up to 10 degrees by midweek
On Wednesday, the beginning of the meteorological winter, Central Europe was under the influence of a mild westerly current. To the east of Salzburg there is initially some rain, snow can only be expected above 1000 meters of altitude. During the day dry and sometimes friendly weather prevails, with most hours of sunshine in the south and in the central mountainous region. In the evening, rain sets in again from Vorarlberg to the Mühlviertel, or snowfall above around 1000 m. The beginning of the north and east, a strong westerly wind, subsides over the course of the day and temperatures rise to 1 to 10 degrees, it is mildest in the Vienna Basin.
Thursday is cloudy again and often wet, especially in the mountains, the snow line drops to 800 to 600 meters. After a temporary improvement, the influence of low pressure tends to continue on the second weekend in Advent.
