FLESH by Sophie Linsmaux and Aurélio Mergola at the Festival d’Avignon 2022
Sophie Linsmaux and Aurelio Mergola’s Still Life company will present FLESH his new creation at the Festival d’Avignon 2022.
From a wedding anniversary party to a hospital room, from a virtual reality experience to a New Year’s Eve in a café, FLESH creates four short stories for four performers with whom Sophie Linsmaux and Aurelio Mergola set out to map the body from every angle. From scalpel cuts to misshapen figures, including metamorphosis, FLESH brings flesh into play. Bruised flesh, raw flesh, but also tender flesh. Touched in her matter by the blows received as touched in her soul by her quest for the other. Anchored in his body for better or for worse, the human being is FLESH. A visual and non-verbal spectacle, a contemporary fable which, with humor and strangeness, moves us in an invigorating way.
Since 2011, we – Sophie Linsmaux and Aurelio Mergola – have been developing a unique scenic language and designing our shows as a playground where rigor, strangeness and humor constantly rub shoulders. This two-headed approach tends towards real complementarity, gives us a very rich creative force and is part of a long-term approach. Throughout our projects, we refine our form towards a very written visual theater. Without words, we portray a world where everything is going terribly wrong. We are working to distort time, to put our bodies and nerves on edge. Finally, our theater, cut off from all words, depicts and questions a world where endangered humanity tries at all costs to find a meaning and a necessity.
Since our first creation, we have wanted to gather around us a core of partners. Together, we work both on the development of projects and their realization on the set. They are Aurélie Deloche scenographer, Sophie Leso dancer, Thomas van Zuylen screenwriter, Sophie Jallet assistant, Muriel Legrand actress. It is thanks to these relationships and their durability that the quality of our artistic identity can be refined and last.
