The high number of visitors confirms the Zurich career fair as an important meeting point when choosing a career
On November 27, 2021, the 16th Zurich career fair came to a successful close. During the last five days around 50,000 people have visited the largest Swiss professional fair in Zurich. Compared to the last event in 2019, 11% more schoolchildren and schoolchildren obtained information about numerous apprenticeships, basic and advanced training courses. The enormous number of visitors shows how great the need is for an information and exchange platform for vocational training.
49,575 people attended the Zurich career fair from November 23 to 27, 2021. Among them were 21,561 high school students from 10 cantons who attended the fair accompanied by their teachers. After the Zurich career fair had to be canceled three weeks before the start of the corona event last year, this is 11% more students than when it was last held in 2019. These figures confirm the great need for a physical event that enables direct exchange between the teaching companies and enables interested young people and focuses on discovering and trying out professions. The Zurich career fair convinced once again with its unique and lively insight into the world of work. So it was possible to build, chisel, sand, solder, plan, do the hairdressing, dig, drive, program, mix or bake on site.
Many of the young people came back in the afternoons or on Saturday with their parents or friends at the Zurich career fair after attending class. For five days, the largest Swiss professional show was the focus of career choice, basic and advanced training. 90 professional associations, companies and schools show a representative cross-section of the Swiss educational landscape.
Exciting accompanying program
The opening ceremony with Education Director Silvia Steiner and the journalist, physicist and philosopher Ludwig Hasler marked the start of the Zurich career fair. Government councilor Steiner summed up the dynamism and flexibility required of trainers and trainees in her opening speech:
“Cross-country is the new straight line.” SHE addressed the diversity of the sometimes new or changing professions and the increased agility required, which has not escaped the youngsters either. The Zurich career fair accommodates the diversity and dynamism of the professional world with low-threshold contact options. “There is a great need for all 3rd secondary school students to be able to grasp vocational training with hands”, Beloved Steiner stated after the tour. The week was rounded off with the parents’ event on Saturday, where Niklaus Schatzmann, head of the cantonal secondary school and vocational training office, emphasized the advantages of vocational training and the permeability of the vocational training system in Switzerland: The goal of politics that 95 percent of all 25-year-olds have a qualification at upper secondary level or higher will be exceeded. Switzerland has the lowest youth unemployment rate in the world. “And while vocational training has a worse reputation with some parents than high school education, there are many opportunities for further training.” Other prominent guests such as Viktor Giacobbo, Sandro Brotz and Arthur Honegger paid a visit to the Zurich career fair. The application campus with free services for all aspects of professional orientation met with great interest this year as well. The short presentations in the forum on application and apprenticeship search as well as the events specially designed for parents were well attended.
