Showmen frustration because of the Senate’s fairground plans – BZ Berlin
The area in Wedding is to be built on with apartments. Thousands of jobs are threatened.
The mood among the mood makers is in the basement …
The Berlin Showmen Association is shocked at the plans of the SPD, the Greens and the Left. The new (old) Senate will build apartments on the central fairground on Kurt-Schumacher-Damm. So it was decided in the coalition agreement.
“Over 120 family businesses in the showman trade have dedicated their lives to the ‘hype’ for many generations,” says Michael Roden (59), 1st chairman of the showmen’s association.
He emphasizes: “We are creating around 1000 full-time jobs all year round and several thousand seasonal jobs. Now the future government factions want to deprive us of our livelihoods. “
The grounds of the fairground, where once an ammunition and arms depot of the French allies ten were, was redeveloped for millions of D-Marks. 21 years ago the showmen moved from Lützowplatz to the 7.5 hectare area.

Spring festival, folk festival, Oktoberfest and, most recently, the autumn hustle and bustle attracted more than a million visitors every year. The corona measures then overthrew the capital’s showmen in a serious crisis. At some point, however, the pandemic will be over. And then?
“The central fairground is a crowd puller,” said Roden. “He invites guests from all over the world to Berlin because there is always something going on. And now this coalition is chasing the showmen out of town with the stroke of a pen. Alternative offers: none. “
The showmen’s association is now calling for the plans to be abandoned. “Instead, the respective commitments and the area will be further developed as a ‘central festival place’ in Berlin,” said Roden.
