San Marino and Emilia Romagna together for geriatric excellence
The tenth edition of the second level Master in Geriatric Medicine that the University of the Republic of San Marino has been organizing together with the University of Ferrara for ten years in San Marino will close in a few days, specifying on November 30th, thanks to the support of the San Marino Association of Gerontology and Geriatrics (ASGG). An initiative that neglects has titled over 160 graduates and training, among other things, a basic specialist on diseases related to aging and their treatment. A project created to provide the essential notions of Geriatric Medicine to white doctors from all over the peninsula who work daily with elderly patients: general practitioners and specialists, orthopedists, anesthetists but also psychologists and nurses who, in the 1500 hours of training, assist a high standard of skill in multidimensional geriatric assessment. While waiting to examine the registrations, Dr Carlo Renzini, president of ASGG who is the coordinator of the teaching of the Master “It is a great satisfaction for us, every year, to find ourselves graduating doctors to whom we have transmitted a high level training in the field of Geriatric Medicine, with reference to epidemiology, diseases related to aging, their classification and treatment. The attention that is given to us by general practitioners was known, we are proud of the elderly patient, of the support to the family and of the approach to all related problems. ” Skills increasingly requested as confirmed by the Director of the Master, Prof. Giovanni Zuliani, University of Ferrara “The need for training in this area is growing exponentially among medical personnel. In the last century there has been, in all Western countries, an increase in the population in old age. The patient has particular characteristics that stand out and all a particular preparation by the doctors who work with him every day, both inside and outside the dedicated structures. ” The teaching activity, with compulsory attendance and also possible remotely, is divided into 10 modules, distributed over 10 months over an academic year. Each didactic module is organized in two days: Friday (morning and afternoon) and Saturday (morning) and will consist of theoretical-practical lessons and any supplementary cultural activities. The link with San Marino is also strong, also sealed by the fact that the master is dedicated to one of the creators, Prof. Giancarlo Ghironzi. A central role, and not only for its geographical position, is played by the Republic today in the panorama of Italian Geriatric Medicine: in the master there are many teachings from other universities and bodies and institutes involved in order to offer a truly unique educational offer. The ASGG Scientific Committee is chaired by prof. Domenico Cucinotta, teacher of the master together, just to name a few, with luminaries such as Alessandro Capucci, Andrea Ungar, Amedeo Zurlo, Andrea Fabbo and Rabbih Chattat. To the latter the burden of training learners on psychogeriatrics, guaranteeing a multidisciplinary approach to the patient that is more important than ever today.
