Ironically, the first big slip happened against the newly promoted football champions Salzburg. On Saturday, the “Bulls”, who were not used to punch, once again conceded a 1: 2 (0: 1) at home-strong Austria Klagenfurt and thus their first defeat of the season in the domestic championship. Turgay Gemicibasi (30th) and Markus Pink (80th) gave the home side a 2-0 lead in the ghost game, Rasmus Kristensen’s goal (91st) came much too late.
That did not change the clear lead of Salzburg with 12 points ahead of WAC, but for the rest of the autumn season and the “final” in the Champions League against Sevilla FC in a week and a half, the latest development does not bode well: There have been six league games in the last six only one win and two draws, the last six competitive games brought three defeats, two draws and only one threesome.
Klagenfurt coach Peter Pacult wanted a “star day” and he got one. His team inflicted the mostly unimaginative guests of the first league defeat since April 21, 2021 (2: 3 at WSG Tirol) and climbed 17 points behind Salzburg to fourth place, at least until Sunday. In your own stadium you are still without defeat.
Salzburg received the bad news of a slight thigh injury from central defender Maximilian Wöber while warming up before the game, and summer newcomer Kamil Piatkowski had to jump into the deep end. The Pole, who broke his ankle in mid-September, was actually intended for the bank when he made his “lightning comeback”. In addition, Jaissle rotated relatively intensely, made four changes compared to Lille.
Daouda Guindo tried his hand at the back four for the first time from the start, Oumar Solet played in defense headquarters instead of Jerome Onguene and midfield Nicolas Capaldo and Antoine Bernede, who was rarely in demand, joined the team.
As in previous weeks, Salzburg found it difficult to put their playful dominance at risk, initially only a low long-range shot from Mohamed Camara (Phillip Menzl held / 5th) fielded this category. But Menzl’s counterpart Philipp Köhn also had to do after a high ball win by the home side and Florian Rieder tried to play half-volley (16.).
Christopher Cvetkos had seen winning the ball against Solet. But not referee Gerhard Grobelnik, who checked the scene after VAR intervention. This meant that Gemicibasi’s goal after Assist Pinks was valid and Salzburg was in a bind.
Salzburg looks tired
Because the tiredness could be seen in the guests, the disciplined, physical game of the Carinthians on the counter-stalking gave them a headache. After all, the opportunities were better: Adeyemi aimed past the far corner after a quick advance (40th), Sesko cheered shortly before the break because he was just offside (42nd).
The guest dominance was not really noticeable until around the hour. Grobelnik had decided on a free kick after studying a video because of a foul by “Joker” Luka Sucic on a 911. That motivated Salzburg additionally, Adeyemi (over it / 67th), Sucic after a nice solo (Menzl parried / 68th) or again Sucic (over / 72nd) caused violet moments of shock.
The possession of the ball remained high, the brilliant ideas were missing. That was punished bitterly in the finish. Pink completed a quick play over five stations without Salzburg intervention in the penalty area, Köhn maneuvered the admittedly sharp ball into his own goal. Kristensen’s fifth goal of the season in stoppage time came too late.
