The construction of the country’s largest apple-growing facility in Újfehértó will be completed by March next year, the Minister of Agriculture said at the inauguration ceremony of the HUF 9.6 billion investment in the small town of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg on Saturday.
István Nagy explained that the research, consulting and post-harvest logistics center based on apple production will also have storage, sorting and packaging infrastructure, with a capacity of 9,000 tons and will be able to sell a total of 20,000 tons of table and industrial apples and other fruits. During the work started in February, the foundation of the buildings, the construction of the structure and the external cladding were examined, and the procurement of the sorting and packaging technology was completed, the head of the ministry added.

This center is the cornerstone of the renewal of Hungarian apple production, its most important task is to integrate the producers of the region, the Minister of Agriculture said. He recalled that for decades the sector had been looking for a way to make apple production more profitable and competitive, and to provide farmers with a secure market and a growing vision. Meanwhile, apples have become the third most important fruit in the world, Hungary’s apple production in an average year is between 500-600 thousand tons, but in the last 15 years this amount has fluctuated between 170 thousand and 780 thousand tons.
The government is striving to better adapt Hungarian apple production to market conditions, with more than 770 producers from Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county applying for the tender for the renewal of horticultural farms in the rural development program launched to promote this, said István Nagy, noting that The establishment of the facility in Újfehértó with HUF 1.5 billion. He said that a call for proposals supporting the planting of plantations was published in April, applications were received for more than HUF 20 billion, and the total area of fruit-growing areas planned by farmers reached 2,500 hectares. In view of the success, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to reopen the tender, and producers are expected to submit their applications in February 2022, István Nagy said.
