Davis Cup: The Hungarians lead with their red feat victory
Torino – Red Zsombor, on the other hand, won a brilliant victory from the set disadvantage, thus leading the Hungarians 1-0 against Australia in the group matches of the Davis Cup final in Turin in tennis.
The federal captain Gábor Köves appointed the main characters on Friday, according to which Márton Fucsovics and Zsombor Piros will take part in the field, and Fábián Marozsán will be on the side of Fucsovics in pairs.
On the other side of the net was the second most successful team in Davis Cup history, with the Australians winning the team competition 28 times – last time they triumphed in 2003. Former world first and two-time Grand Slam champion Lleyton Hewitt has been a member of the DK-winning national team for 18 years and in 1999, but has already led the team as captain in Turin. Alex de Minaur, Alexei Popyrin and John Millman are also in the top 100, and pair specialist John Peers is a two-time world champion and one-time Grand Slam winner.
At the opening of the battle, the 282nd-placed Red entered the field in his fifth DK match against the 72nd John Millman, who played all routine for 32 years in the first set, which at times was not enough. The balanced game brought a lot of bad punches and – in an unusual way for men – five breaks, at 5: 4 the 22-year-old Hungarian lost his organ again, which was already in the set.
There were plenty of inaccurate punches on both sides in the jump as well, then the Australian Open 2017 junior champion’s hand didn’t shake at 5: 4, breaking the edge and outsourcing the game.
The final set started with three breaks, then after 3: 1 Piros confidently maintained his advantage, and even broke again at 5: 3, ending the 2-hour 18-minute match.
In the sequel, Márton Fucsovics (40th) follows Alex de Minaur (34th) in the Pala Alpitur.
The Hungarian national team will clash with the Croats in Group D from 10 am on Sunday. The winner of the trio will face the triple champion of the United States, Italy and Colombia in Group E on Monday in the quarter-finals, where the top two will be in addition to the six group winners.
The 121-year-old Davis Cup underwent a major overhaul in 2019, the winner of the men’s national team competition series coming out of an 18-team, one-week finale, with traditional home and away duels taking place only in the qualifiers. The first such tournament was held in Madrid last year due to a coronavirus epidemic, and this year the international federation has announced that, with previous plans, it will host matches not only in the Spanish capital, but also in Turin and Innsbruck.
