Zidane at PSG “it would be a hell of a blow” for Marseille, Di Meco analysis
If Paris Saint-Germain has just separated from its coach Mauricio Pochettino, several names have already been mentioned to succeed him. Zinedine Zidane, former Real Madrid coach (2016-2018, 2019-2021), is on that short list. Originally from the city of Marseille, the 98 world champion would disappoint a lot if he came to join the club in the capital. Among them, Éric Di Meco, former player of the Olympique de Marseille (1980-1994) now a consultant, as he mentioned on CMR.
“Even in my most terrible nightmares, I can’t imagine Zizou coaching PSG. He was born in Marseille, he was a fan of OM when he was younger, you come to the Vélodrome, he made his career elsewhere and he has the right to train PSG. No one is going to blame him. But here, it would be a hell of a blow … Me, it would seem funny. It would be a big blow to morale. Then he has his career to do. “
Zidane would have everything to lose by coming to PSG and maybe even France. The latter is clearly a football legend, but even more so in his country since his double in the World Cup final in 1998. At Real Madrid, the latter has won the Champions League three times (2016, 2017, 2018), something that no coach had managed to do before him. If he joins the club in the capital, a myth will collapse for many of his admirers. Even if it remains an interesting project for him, he has already proven himself as a coach.
Joining PSG is therefore a very risky car if it ends in failure, its image will certainly take a hit. On the side of Parisian supporters, some may not agree to see a coach from the city of Marseille at the head of this team. Even if this arrival is largely possible, it would be a surprising choice as much for the part of the coach as of the club. However, in view of what he has achieved, it would certainly be a great help to get this Champions League that PSG lacks.
