Early December and we still count hundreds of thousands across the country and tens of thousands in the two Directorates of Thessaloniki, lost teaching hours for students. 150 vacancies only in Western Thessaloniki! 50 in the general, 25 in the parallel, 25 in the integration sections and 50 in the reinforcing.
As we go through a period of renewed pandemic and schools are full of cases, the ministry is struggling to advance the assessment, enforcing mergers and creation of departments for 26-28 children, restricting the recruitment of teachers and school cleaners, canceling any prevention efforts. coronavirus, measures that clearly aim to further cut education spending, in the context of the anti-education policy of restrictions and austerity.
The “upgrading of the school” (the auspicious misleading title of the assessment) is proving daily that it leads to the extermination of teachers, thousands of dismissals of deputies and the intensity of terrorism and authoritarianism.
The total recruitment of deputies, not only does not correspond to the real needs of the schools to operate with protection measures and to meet the educational needs of the students, they are less than the total ones that were made last year. Many deputies became unemployed after the barrage of mergers (application of the anti-education law for evaluation, Law 4823/2021) in the previous period which shows the indication to increase the number of students / department (already operating with 27 and 28 students), to close mass departments and schools. The attempted, through the evaluation, their categorization will endanger thousands of organic positions and will hit deeper the educational rights of the students.
Teachers’ working hours are directly attacked by the assignment of mandatory overtime to colleagues. They break gaps and distribute hours to existing colleagues, they even violate the curriculum, reducing the scheduled hours of each course under the pretext of “doing each section even an hour”, since they systematically refuse to hire deputies and fill all the gaps. The protagonists are the Principals of education, the corrupt PYSDE and the Principals of schools who demand from the colleagues to undertake overtime, instead of asking what their colleagues demand, to hire deputies to fill the gaps and not with obligatory overtime.
The total recruitment of deputies in the Directorate of Western Thessaloniki now, after four recruitments in general education and special education, is 400, while last year it was 502. Even if we count the 113 newly appointed teachers who were placed in schools, the recruitments were made after of four placement phases are not enough to operate the schools with all the gaps covered. The situation with the real gaps in schools is even more dramatic because the pensions this year reached 233. No teacher has received a special purpose leave resulting in an increase in leave for health reasons.
Last year, the total recruitment of deputies in secondary education was 15,789, while so far for this year 11,612 were recruited (5,944 in the phase, 1,847 in the NW, 1,805 in the DG and 2016 in the DG). Thousands are still in all education structures, even if the 5,400 teachers corrected in the secondary school were counted because of the increase in teacher pensions (3,700 in the secondary school), as well as the teachers for health reasons.
The situation with the recruitment of deputies in special education is dramatic because they do not cover all the hours provided for students with special problems. covered almost only half the gaps compared to last year. At the same time, they identify the gaps so that no more than two colleagues are hired in each school unit!
No deputies have been hired for remedial teaching.

The placements of the deputies are made without basic criteria of transparency and objectivity, the vacancies are not made public, they are given by default and not all and whatever vacancies are given to the colleagues are given to each deputy separately. All in secret! The Directorate, after protests from ELME and the teachers, accepted that the positions of the deputies through OPSYD should not be valid and that the gaps should be made public before each category of placements. This was applied to the placements of the permanent ones in functional vacancies and only in the first two positions of the placements of the deputies and with problems in the B phase that the vacancies were changed without justification. Twice they announced gaps for placements in general education, but both times they changed the gap lists. Gaps in the DG and D phase were not announced at all. For the Directorate there are no conditions of parity and fairness among all teachers, there is only the anti-educational policy and it serves!
We demand – we claim
Fill in all the gaps in all the educational structures now.
No mandatory overtime. Gaps to be filled by deputies.
Transparent procedures in all placements of deputies.
The Administrations to secure to the deputies the right of objections.
Stop department contractions – 15 students in the department
Full employment, insurance and trade union rights for deputies.
To approve the so-called small members in S.M.E.A.E.
Now mass recruitment of teachers (EBP and EEP) to meet all needs.
Not in the gaps in special education. Cover all hours for students.
Announce all gaps in special education, as requested by schools.
