Christmas lights and markets are opening in Slovenia
STA, 26 November 2021 – The festive season begins in Slovenian cities, as hundreds of thousands of lights will be turned on on Friday and Saturday and Christmas fairs will begin in larger cities. Due to the epidemiological situation, there will be no mass events on this occasion.
Christmas lights will be lit in Ljubljana and Maribor today, but just like last year, the exact time to avoid crowds is not yet known.
In the capital, as many as 50 kilometers of lights will be lit as part of the festive decoration designed by Urban Modic and this year celebrating the importance of community and harmony.
Tonight, the Christmas market is also opening, which this year will expand to Stritarjeva ulica, which leads to the City Hall.
On the banks of the Ljubljanica, straw cribs will usually be on display, Zvezda Park will be decorated with lanterns made by primary school children, and citizens and visitors will decorate 79 green trees on four streets in the city center.
It is not yet clear how the five concerts will take place in December. Mayor Zoran Janković is proposing to visitors to convalece or vaccinate, but he still needs the green light from the National Institute of Public Health to relocate.
In the second largest Slovenian city, Maribor, the festive magic will culminate on the Main Square and Leon Å tukelj Square. A festive carousel will take place on the Main Square this year, as was the case in a holiday commercial recently filmed in the city center.
Visitors will be greeted by Lumina light sculptures on the city streets and squares, and urban forest photo points will be set up around the city.
Elf City will also open on Friday, where events and workshops will take place throughout December. Santa Claus will be riding in his carriage around the city between December 14th and 21st.
The festive season in coastal Izola will also start on Friday, and Christmas lights will be lit in Koper on Saturday. Outdoor skating rinks will open in both cities, and several events are scheduled for December.
Other cities in Slovenia will be in a festive mood this or next weekend, and there will be a record 1.7 million Christmas lights in the Mozirski gaj park in Mozirje this year.
In Nova Gorica, the lights will be turned on next Friday. A book fair will be organized in the city, and visitors will be able to produce electricity by bicycle to light Christmas trees.
Murska Sobota in the northeast has canceled all holiday events due to the epidemic, but it will still turn on almost 60,000 lights on the eve of St. Nicholas.
