Slovenia supports Poland in border protection – EURACTIV.com
Slovenia expressed support for Poland’s position on border protection when Prime Minister Janez Jansa hosted his Polish counterpart Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday.
Jansa expressed solidarity with Poland and condemned the actions of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, which he said “exploited people to achieve political goals and tried to destabilize not only Poland but the entire EU”.
He congratulated the Polish government on “decisive and courageous action – including diplomatic – thanks to which the wave of illegal migration pressing on the Polish border has been stopped, at least temporarily.”
Janša believes that physical barriers at the borders have effectively prevented illegal migration and violence.
He pointed out that Slovenia was trying to gain Poland’s support in the migrant crisis as part of its presidency of the EU Council. Slovenia also offered direct assistance in the form of police officers to help protect the border.
Morawiecki said that Slovenia and Poland share views on security. He stressed the importance of protecting borders to preserve the sovereignty of the state. “If a state wants to be sovereign, it must decide for itself who is allowed to enter its territory.”
