“Cruel”, “morbid spectacle”: animalists in Rouen wage war on anti-pigeon peaks

the Animalist party of Rouen (Seine-Maritime) has not finished pointing the finger at methods that it is also worth cruel thatunsanitary, practiced in the city center. After the anti-pigeon nets suspended from the Boieldieu bridge, which were the responsibility of the Metropolis and which it quickly had removed, then the ecological rat traps, the activists are returning to the cause pigeons, exterminated through Pictures.
These, in particular located under the framework of the covered market on the Place du Vieux-Marché, recently trapped a bird, which impaled itself there and whose remains remained suspended in everyday view.
“A morbid spectacle”
Alerted to the situation by Rouen residents in early November, the Animalist Party, through the voice of Pierre-Alexandre Guesdon, wrote an open letter addressed to the City. “The idea was to see if the services of the town hall were going to remove the corpse, well no. He stayed, ”laments the defender of animal rights. Of course, the mail is for but real to remove from the landscape these devices, described as “barbaric” and “presenting a morbid spectacle to passers-by”.
A reality all the more disturbing as the mayor Nicolas Mayer-Rossignol, when he was a candidate in the 2020 elections, relates Pierre-Alexandre Guesdon, had signed a charter in favor of animal welfare in the urban space. “After the election promise, we have not seen any acts …”
The dovecote, the preferred alternative
“If it is to prevent droppings from being on passers-by, it is no longer droppings that fall, but pieces of dead animals. However, there is no shortage of alternatives, according to him. “There are large cables that obstruct their passage, but also dovecotes, why not sterilizing, to settle the pigeons. We had already asked the City and the Metropolis for funders, and even using crowdfunding or partnerships with carpentry and carpentry schools for example. We are waiting for actions. “
And the animalist adds: “Pigeons regulate their population with food. With sterilizing lofts, there is a way to control the doses. Finally, he recalls that it is very unlikely to contract diseases linked to pigeons, “unless you live in droppings 24 hours a day with them”.
Soon a position in the City dedicated to animal welfare?
On the side of the City of Rouen, the assistant for energy transition and animal welfare, in particular, Jean-Michel Bérégovoy, explains that the subject is taken very seriously. “I asked that a position be created for animal welfare as well as a budget to help the SNPA [Société normande de protection animale] “. The goal, not only to respect the “legitimate commitment, to find solutions”, given by the municipal team, but also “to avoid the devices of the last centuries”.
For this, the elected EELV is inspired by what is done elsewhere, in Nantes, Tours, Rennes. For the anti-pigeon peaks, therefore, he aligns himself with the animalists, by qualifying the “contraceptive dovecotes” as “the best solution”. “The pigeons come to lay there, and the eggs are destroyed painlessly,” he explains. The City could finance the constitution of a few, in areas where there are public buildings ”.
If their funding is not described as problematic, their maintenance is. “People have to take care of it… The City cannot mobilize one person. He should do with associations, ”adds Jean-Michel Bérégovoy, before concluding that SNPA subsidies should drop from 9,000 to some 40,000 euros soon.
