Corona: Less actively infected people in Salzburg, but significantly more intensive care patients
The daily corona statistics for the state of Salzburg offer – at least temporarily – positive news. The number of people actively infected has fallen sharply. The other news is less good: the number of intensive care patients has risen sharply.
17,254 actively infected people were reported Monday morning. On Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, this number was almost 2,000 people lower at 15,266. The seven-day incidence value has also been reserved, at 1,689.1 (Monday morning: 1,704.3), although this is still the highest federal state value in Austria.
The reason for this decline is the high number of people who have since recovered over the weekend. The pleasant snapshot is anything but relaxation, let alone the all-clear.
Concern about intensive care units
Because: The total number of the overall positive tests climbed by 865 to 87,866. And there are currently 250 Covid-19 patients in the hospital, 45 of them in the intensive care unit. That is the highest value in the pandemic. The previously indicated upper limit of 51 intensive care beds for the entire federal state is thus quickly reached. The state clinics (SALK) are therefore preparing additional beds for intensive care patients that go beyond this number, said SALK spokesman Wolfgang Fürweger.
According to him, triage is still not an issue. “The situation is tense, but we are still a long way from Bergamo.” The next trigger point in intensive care has been reached. Attempts are currently being made to establish additional intensive care bed clinics in both the state hospital and the Christian Doppler clinic. In the case of normal beds, however, escalation level 12 still applies, because the transfer of patients from other hospitals works very well.
So far there have been 674 events (+ 4 compared to the last report on Monday) in connection with Covid-19.
High scores in schools
The situation in schools and kindergartens is currently noticeable with the development of Covid. Gernot Filipp, Head of State Statistics: “Among the 5 to under 15 year olds, the number of new infections increased by more than 60 percent in the last week, the 10 to 14 year olds currently have the highest incidence at 4,400.”
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) is expected to decide on Wednesday whether Biontech / Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine will be approved for five to eleven year olds. Salzburg’s vaccination coordinator Rainer Pusch says: “We are expecting them with high tension and are already in the starting blocks. Child-friendly vaccination routes are being prepared, but of course we also have the pediatricians on board to create the basis for normal school operations as possible.”
The decision of the EMA has been made, the state of Salzburg is starting a special information campaign about child vaccination.
Covid in retirement homes
Ten infected people are employees of the municipal retirement home in Taxham. The facility is at the same time with the lowest vaccination rate among the employees, says Social City Councilor Anja Hagenauer (SPÖ). The outbreak did not bring any restrictions to operation in the home: the home has not been fully utilized since an outbreak in spring.
19 employees of the city homes are currently infected. The residents are not affected by the situation because of the high vaccination rate, only four people are positive. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) recently warned of outbreaks in retirement homes, says Hagenauer. Be careful.
These are now also letting the Salzburg state clinics rule: In the hospitals, the 2G-plus rule has been gilded since Monday: Visitors are only allowed to visit those who have been vaccinated and who also have a negative PCR test. At the same time, the ban on visitors to Tamsweg will be lifted.
