10 dishes you should have eaten in Salzburg [LOCKDOWN EDITION]
Bad weather, crappy coronavirus: When nothing helps, good food helps. We have a list of our Salzburg favorite dishes that you can also eat at home in lockdown. Oh, there are no Salzburger Nockerl.
The Butter Chicken from Lakhi’s Indian Kitchen
No, the main ingredient of the Indian classic is not butter. But you could guess that the chicken melts so gently on your tongue. If there really is one dish you want to get into, this is it. And it tastes best with dear Lakhi. Order here.
Pumpkin sandwich with black onions
The little vendor’s tray on Sterneckstrasse is not only a cool place because it gives women in precarious life a chance to return to work. The food is also impressive. Our favorite: The vegan Black Onion Pumpkin Sandwich. The filled bread looks small, but is absolutely sufficient as a main course. Avid eaters ideally combine it with the beetroot and beluga lentil salad. Then you are full and happy! Pick up here.
The Yaki Gyoza by Yaoyao
At YaoYao, the dumplings, which are often inspired, are used as starters, but we order two or three servings and combine them with sushi or a soup to make a main course out of them. The little wonder wussis really do that. At YaoYao, they are served alongside an ingenious beer vinegar, soy and garlic sauce, in which the sinfully good pieces receive their final unction before they leave for the eternal hunting grounds of your stomach. Amen! Order here.
The veggie burger with bacon from the French fries boutique
Speaking of sinful: We could have a discussion at this point as to whether it is not downright cynical to garnish a vegetarian burger with a thick slice of bacon. But we can leave it and instead admit openly that we haven’t had a better burger in a long time. To reassure everyone who finds the vegetarian crossover going too far: the burger tastes very good even without the bacon slice. What you shouldn’t leave out: the thick fries with the homemade sauce based on the Belgian model. Order here.
The Pizza Piccolo Giò from Casa Antonio
It is perfectly clear that a pizza should not be missing from this list. The choice is more difficult, because with this topic religious wars ignite again and again among our esteemed readers. We now just dare and throw the Pizza Piccolo Giò from Casa Antonio into the ring. The homemade dough, the garnish of tomatoes, rocket and parmesan – a dream! Order or pick up here.
The rice noodle rolls from Yuen
The Yuen is the oldest Chinese restaurant in Salzburg. Recently, however, the youngest generation has taken over the reins and given the menu a makeover. Participation is the focus on vegetarian and vegan dishes. Our favorite are the self-made rice noodle rolls. Soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, refined with spring onions and a sweet soy hoisin sauce, they are just adorable. Order here.
The antipasto platter from Pasta e Vino
The little Italian on Wolf-Dietrich-Straße has always been one of our absolute favorite bars. There has actually never been a menu here, but the best pasta in town and excellent antipasti. We urgently recommend the latter for use at home as well. With a loaf of home-made ciabatta (try the Brandner’s, for example), you get a full meal. Order here.
The Tempeh Knight from Roots-Mülln36
This bowl offers unforeseen taste experiences, in which everything from rolled barley to sprouts is almost unsympathetically healthy. Only the truffle mayo adds a touch of irrationality. Order here.
The Fat Boys from Daghofers
Right in the heart of Ignaz-Harrer-Strasse is a beautiful Ceconi villa, in which the Hotel Lehenerhof has resided for many years. Not quite that long – namely only two or three years – there is the grill on the ground floor, where excellent steaks are served. Our personal favorites, however, are the ribs, which you can buy and devour here in different variations. And yes, it’s actually a kind of loopy, predator-like condition. Good for us: The Daghofers also delivers home. Order here.
Pad Thai from Lek
Because we are big fans of Pad Thai, we have tried many times to cook this Thai national dish at home. Result: It never tastes as good as with Lek. Everything fits together here and you can dream of your next vacation. Winter blues, go shit! Order here.
