Try feeding giraffes at the Prague Zoo! Win an experience with iDNES Premium
Prague Zoo breeds 700 species of animals and not everyone is as popular as a gorilla, elephant or giraffe. That is why the zoo organizes an adoption campaign every year at this time, in which they draw attention to unjustly neglected animals, which are less interesting.
“Orphans”, ie species of animals that have no sponsor this year, include, for example, the rhinoceros, the Indian takin, the spiny tortoise or the Congo goldfinch. You can adopt or sponsor all these animals. This time it is very easy to send money to them using the QR code, which you will find in the pictures of individual animals. Sponsorship is the support of an animal in any amount over CZK 100, adoption is the support of a fixed annual part, which is for each species. You will find them in this list.
Let’s imagine this year’s “orphans”:
Rhinoceros rhinoceros
No other birds can boast such a massive and imposing formation on the beak as the hornbills have. However, it is not just a decoration – the hollow horn acts as a speaker, which amplifies the voice, which is especially useful during courtship. However, the numbers of hornbills in their Indonesian homeland are steadily declining due to deforestation and hunting.
Indian takin
The unusual appearance earned takin nicknames like cattle chamois or wild goat. However, this distinctive relative of goats and sheep is also well adapted to the alpine conditions of the Himalayas and Sichuan. It warms the cold inhaled air with its wide nose, thick fur and musk protects it from bad weather.
Spiny tortoise
The adult tortoise is not spiny at all, but the carapace of the young is like a cogwheel – sharp thorns protrude from the edge labels, which definitely do not easily make small tortoises prey. Like many other freshwater turtles from Southeast Asia, this species is also highly threatened by poaching and environmental loss.
Congo goldfinch
nevertheless, this beetle is a frequent and popular terrarium inmate, not much is still known about it. In addition to the beautiful coloring, which earned him the name “sun beetle” in English, he excels in his ability to “sniff” fruit with his exceptionally sensitive tentacles.
