Prague Zoo: A silver gibbon cub was born
Great news! Prague Zoo has great reason to rejoice. On Saturday night, the female silver gibbons Alang Alang (16) and the male Flip (16) gave birth to a baby as the first young of this species in the Czech Republic this year, the historic fourth. The little gibbon is lively to the world.
“Female Alang Alang is already an experienced mother and takes good care of him. She cleaned it immediately after giving birth, keeps it on her stomach and nurses him, “Said the head breeder of primates Martin Vojáček. The baby will start leaving the mother’s arms after about a year, and the milk will continue to do so for at least another six months. Whether it is a boy or a girl is not yet clear. “Given that there is no significant sexual dimorphism in this species, we will not know the sex until several years after it matures,” Vojáček added.
Gibony silver has been bred by the zoo since 2014. “Breeding pair – female Alang Alang and male Flip – according to the breeders, they immediately fell in love and the first cub was born a year after their union,The zoo added. Their first common cub is now a six-year-old male Silver Arrow, who went to the zoo in Halle, Germany this year as a future breeding male there. A fresh baby is the third common cub of a breeding couple.
It is estimated that less than two thousand adults of this rare primate now live in the wild. “Silver gibbons are an endangered species, occurring only in the wild on the Indonesian island of Java. It is bred only in human care, in Europe there are only nine zoos bred in a total number of approximately 50 individuals, “explained the importance of the cub, director of the Prague Zoo Miroslav Bobek.
