The National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE) has just published a study devoted to the Pink City and its major European counterparts. A study that classifies the “city” of Toulouse in the higher regional poles, like 14 other cities, notably in France, the United Kingdom, or Spain.
As Bordeaux, Lille, Lyon or Nantes, Toulouse is in fact considered by INSEE as a ” higher regional pole“. Poles whose influence is exerted on a nearby territory, unlike world-cities like Paris or London.
Economic dynamism
Particularity of the Toulouse regional hub? The importance of industry, which represents 13% of employment in the city’s territory, has increased. INSEE highlights Toulouse’s economic dynamism, in particular linked to the presence of the aeronautical industries.
“Toulouse polarizes jobs, by attracting workers living beyond: for a person living in the city of Toulouse and going to work outside, nearly four people come to work there, that is to say one more person on average than in the 103 European cities. . “
High qualification level
In the “city of Toulouse”, the level of qualification is particularly high, notes the national statistics institute: more than half of 25-64 year olds have a higher education qualification. With this number the Pink City is located at 8e place of the most qualified metropolises, behind Oxford or Amsterdam.
Income side, Toulouse is also in a good position: “the median annual income, of 21,000 euros, is more than 1,700 euros ahead of that of the higher regional centers and of all the 103 cities. “
A young territory
Another strong point of the Pink City and its surroundings: the youth of its population, at an average of 32.9 years, which ranks Toulouse in the top 10 of the youngest metropolises in Europe. One in five inhabitants is a student.
“The dynamism of the city of Toulouse is accompanied by a pleasant living environment, between a good endowment in cultural and sporting infrastructures and larger housing areas than elsewhere. The living area is 39 m² per person, or 3 m² more than in all the cities in part due to the presence of less dense municipalities (Aucamville, Balma …). “
Weak point: mobility
Side weak points: mobility. “Due to the number of workers coming from outside (…), car journeys are particularly long and exceed the European average by 8 km. The use of the car is also more used in the Toulouse metropolis. And cyclists remain much rarer than in German and Dutch metropolises, notes INSEE.
” The air quality is still correct in the city of Toulouse“, Notes INSEE which specifies all the same that the strong sunshine and the high temperatures of the transformation into ozone of these pollutants. “The city is thus obtained by ozone concentrations among the highest,” notes the study.
