COVID-19 and Low Vaccination Rates. In the pandemic, Russia was every fourth veteran of the Great Patriotic War – Society – News of St. Petersburg
Over a year and a half of the pandemic in Russia, more than 312 thousand participants and veterans of the Great Patriotic War have died. In April 2020, there were about 1.21 million, and on October 1 – 896 806 people. Losses amounted to 26%, report November 22 “Vedomosti” citing data from the Ministry of Labor.
Prior to this, the reduction was slower: according to statistics, mortality among veterans and participants in the Second World War has increased by one and a half times over the past year and a half. At the beginning of 2019, 1.28 million citizens of this category lived in the country. Then the mortality rate for people over 85 years old in Russia was 164 people per 1,000 deaths, in 2020 – 190 people.
The main reasons for this jump are coronavirus and low vaccination rates. According to Rosstat, only a third of Russians were vaccinated, and 83% of the deaths from coronavirus in the country are people over 60 years old. Half of elderly patients require hospitalization, in 75-year-olds the risk of a severe course of the disease increases 7 times, in 80-year-olds – 9 times.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that more than 50 million Russians had already been vaccinated against the coronavirus with Sputnik V.
In St. Petersburg, as well as in Russia, a decrease in the incidence of coronavirus and the number of deaths was recorded. About what this may be connected with, read the material of “Fontanka”.
