Sweden is hosting World Environment Day 2022
(MENAFN- Caribbean News Global) NAIROBI, Kenya – The Swedish government will host World Environment Day 2022 in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). In 2022, it will be 50 years since the UN’s first conference on the human environment – the Stockholm Conference in 1972, which led to the creation of UNEP and designates 5 June each year as World Environment Day.
World Environment Day 2022 will be held under the theme Only One Earth, which highlights the need to live sustainably in harmony with nature by leading transformative changes – through policies and our choices – towards cleaner, greener lifestyles. Only One Earth was the motto for the Stockholm Conference in 1972; 50 years later, the motto applies – this planet is our only home, whose finite resources must protect humanity.
The Minister of the Environment and Climate and Sweden’s Deputy Prime Minister Per Bolund said: “As the proud host of World Environment Day 2022, Sweden will highlight the most important environmental considerations, showcase our country’s initiative and the global efforts to deal with climate and nature crises. global community around the world to participate in the important discussions and celebrations. “
According to the UNEP’s Making Peace with Nature report published earlier this year, transforming social and economic systems means improving our relationship with nature, understanding its value and putting that value at the center of decision-making.
“In 2022, we hope to see a world turn around for the worst of the covid-19 pandemic. But we do so with the knowledge that we will continue to face the triple planetary crises of climate change, natural losses and pollution,” said Inger Andersen, CEO Director of UNEP at the Center for Environmental Work reminds us of the roots of the critical work to protect our environment and adds a crucial impetus to global efforts to build better and greener. “
“Since we hosted the Stockholm Conference five decades ago, Sweden has made significant progress and record investments in environmental protection, including a long-term climate goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2045 and negative emissions thereafter,” she added. “Its welcoming role as host of World Environment Day 2022 is therefore a reflection of both a historic commitment and leadership and a high level of ambition for the future.”
World Environment Day takes place every year on 5 June. It is UN Flagship Day to promote worldwide awareness and action on the environment. Over the years, it has grown to become the largest global platform for environmental protection and is hailed by millions of people around the world.
In addition, the Swedish Government in 2022 will host Stockholm + 50, an international meeting to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 1972 Stockholm Conference and to accelerate implementation to deliver on the 2030 agenda and achieve a sustainable recovery from covid-19.
Stockholm + 50 will provide an opportunity for the international community to strengthen cooperation and show leadership in the transformation towards a more sustainable society, in line with the declaration recently adopted in connection with the UN’s 75th anniversary.
The Stockholm Conference in 1972 resulted in the Stockholm Declaration on the human environment, including several guiding principles for global environmental governance. Another result of the meeting was the establishment of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and World Environment Day.
