Russia may join the convention on sunken ships
Russia will join the international convention on the disposal of sunken ships, signed in 2017 in the capital of Kenya – Nairobi. The State Duma is considering such a bill at plenary sessions in the fall session.
The provisions of the Convention apply to ships sunk in the exclusive economic zone of the state.
According to the document, the participating country can require the captain and the vessel of the vessel flying its flag to immediately report an incident due to which the vessel sank. In addition, mariners and interested countries will be notified of this.
If the ship poses a threat to the environment, it must be removed by the owner or the state. In both cases, all costs of locating the vessel and its destruction are borne by the owner.
According to the Convention, all its participants must demand insurance not only from the owners of ships flying the flag of their states, but also from all others entering the ports of these countries.
Ships with a gross tonnage of 300. This will finance the removal of sunken ships.
