Russia won the right to host the 2026 European Women’s Handball Championship. This decision was made at the congress of the European Handball Federation (EHF), reported on the EHF website.
“We have been waiting for the opportunity for a very long time and have worked hard. We are looking forward to this tournament, “said the head of the Russian Handball Federation Sergei Shishkarev.
Russia’s bid to host the tournament was the only one. The joint application of Norway, Denmark and Sweden to host the tournament was previously withdrawn.
The tournament in Russia will be held at three arenas – the Yubileiny Sports Complex and the Sibur-Arena in St. Petersburg, as well as the VTB Arena in Moscow. The tournament will take place on December 3-20, 2026.
In January 2020, the Russian bid lost to the 2024 European Women’s Championship. The tournament will take place in Austria, Hungary and Switzerland. Russia has never hosted the European Women’s Handball Championships.
