Xavi discusses Memphis, Frenkie and Luuk de Jong: ‘Barça really needs it’
Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Luuk de Jong: all Dutchmen passed during Xavi Hernández’s Friday for his baptism of fire as coach of FC Barcelona. The city derby against Espanyol awaits on Saturday.
Xavi was the first to be asked about Memphis. “He is a very important player for us,” said Ronald Koeman’s successor. “We have a player who can make the difference. He showed that this week with the Dutch national team. He can play as a striker and wing attacker. Tomorrow will be how we are going to do it, but we need him badly. He is one of the goalscorers of the team.”
The two De Jongs were also discussed. “We need all the available players. Everyone is important at Barcelona, including Luuk,” he said of the striker, who should be allowed to leave. And about Frenkie: “I repeat: everyone is important. A player is a player who has to be important to us. He has to reach the area, make goals, break lines… Also can make a difference.”
Barcelona will kick off against Espanyol on Saturday at 9 p.m. The Catalans are in ninth place in La Liga in twelve rounds. The deficit on leader Real Sociedad is nine points.
