Thessaloniki-Thermi Cemeteries: Another 150 new graves are ready due to the increase of deaths.
The municipality of Thessaloniki continues to take macabre precautionary measures due to the uncontrolled spread of the coronavirus in the country and the outbreak of cases in Thessaloniki, as in addition to the 240 graves that were recently opened at the Resurrection Cemetery in Thermi, an additional 150 are on standby.
At the end of last week, crews of the Municipality of Thessaloniki secured an additional 250 places in the cemeteries of the Resurrection of the Lord for the victims of the coronavirus, however, the extremely alarming numbers recorded in both cases and deaths, led to the mobilization of the administration to prevent situations that occurred in the first months of the pandemic, so there are no places in cemeteries.
According to the information of ThessToday.gr, the municipality of Thessaloniki can immediately dispose of at least 150 additional graves, in addition to the 240 that were opened last week. The same information states that the number can reach up to 200, given the high number of deaths from coronavirus, as, just this week, more than 270 of our fellow human beings lost the battle with the coronavirus.
The news is confirmed in ThessToday.gr by the authorized elected municipal councilor of the Municipality of Thessaloniki for the Cemeteries of the Resurrection of the Lord, Costas Iakovou, who noted that the Department of Technical Works has already recorded and prepared a study for the additional tombs, signing , Konstantinos Zervas, is very sensitive and focused on dealing with the pandemic. “We are not going to ‘run’ at the last minute. The mayor is monitoring and is particularly sensitive to the issue of the coronavirus. “After preparation that I coordinated with the Department of Technical Works, a study has been prepared to open new tombs”, said Mr. Iakovou, noting that “we estimate that it is 150, but maybe more, depending on the prevailing conditions”.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, a total of 550 graves have been dug in the largest cemeteries of Thessaloniki in a special and isolated burial site for people who have died due to voice disease. Costas Iakovou stressed that out of the 550 graves, about 250 are left available for people who can lose the battle with the coronavirus, plus the 240 that were recently excavated, as well as at least 150 that can be disposed of immediately. “The goal of the municipality of Thessaloniki is to facilitate the citizens in their last home”, he added.
For his part, the Deputy Mayor for Administrative Reform and e-Government of the Municipality of Thessaloniki, George Avarlis, stressed to ThessToday.gr that so far there are no spatial problems in the Resurrection Cemetery of the Lord, while the administration’s measures are related to the dramatic country.
