Slovakia called on Facebook and Google to significantly strengthen the fight against hoaxes
The state’s representatives support the regulation of digital services, which is being prepared by the European Union.
The problem of spreading disinformation needs a Europe-wide solution and social network operators must finally accept their level of responsibility, said the Minister of Informatics Veronika Remišová, state representative, so that her state secretary Ján Hargaš is a representative of Facebook and Google.
At the same time, Remišová reminded that Slovakia supports the efforts of the European Commission to regulate digital services, the aim of which is to prevent the spread of hatred and to protect the values of democracy and freedom.
The Deputy Prime Minister thinks that freedom, human dignity or security cannot be held hostage by multinational corporations, which, however, do not answer to anyone and only make huge profits.
“In the online space, we are witnessing the spread of misinformation, hoaxes and hatred. The companies that run social networks claim that they only provide a platform for dissemination and are not responsible for the content as it is, “said Remišová.
Hargas added that Facebook and Google had called for a significant strengthening of their capacity in the fight against hoaxes and to ensure the filtering of harmful from their platforms.
“We have communicated very clearly the need for a responsible approach by entrepreneurs and large platforms in the field of target advertising, setting up recommended systems and platform algorithms, as well as combating harmful content,” Hargaš found.
