Portugal may reach 6,000 daily cases of COVID-19 by December 17th
Portugal is in the fifth phase of the pandemic and has an incidence of infections of 203 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, being higher in the young population. A recent projection indicates that Portugal may reach 6,000 cases a day by Christmas.
The project Covid-19 Insights from the University of Lisbon warns of the need for mitigation measures. As of December 17, Portugal may reach six thousand daily cases of COVID-19, if not the first hostage measures to contain the pandemic. The alert comes from the Covid-19 Insights project, which will develop a prediction model that forecasts virus activity for the coming weeks.
According to researcher Pedro Simões Coelho, "even in a very pessimistic scenario, it is not expected, until the end of the year, to reach one thousand admissions per day", which will help to avoid the overload of health services.
Also according to data from the Covid-19 Insights project, if Portugal maintained, since October, measures such as teleworking and the use of masks in closed and open spaces with a concentration of people, on December 17th, "3,500 complete cases" were registered. anticipates Pedro Simões Coelho. Admissions would be, in total, close to 500 and about 80 patients in intensive care.
