The footballers of VfL Wolfsburg have to worry about progressing in the Champions League. The “Wolves” lost their home game against Juventus Turin with 0: 2 (0: 0) on Thursday evening.
An own goal by Kathrin Hendrich and a goal in stoppage time sealed the first defeat in the group stage, which caused VfL to slip into third place in the table. The second-placed Turin women are now two points ahead. On December 8th (6:45 pm), VfL will be playing at the bottom of the table, Servette Geneva, while Juventus will compete against the leaders FC Chelsea. On December 16, Wolfsburg will host the Londoners, while Turin will play against Geneva.
VfL assault run without goal closure
Apparently spurred on by the success in the top Bundesliga match against FC Bayern Munich (1-0), the Wolfsburg team put Juventus under pressure right from the start. The party only knew one direction, it was constantly heading towards Pauline Peyraud-Magnin’s goal – the only catch: the guest goalkeeper hardly ever had to intervene. The VfL women attacked early and quickly combined forward after conquering the ball, but precision was lacking on the last pass.
Juventus more dangerous
Martina Rosucci’s attempt clearly missed the goal of VfL keeper Almuth Schult (23rd). It was much more dangerous ten minutes later, when Barbara Bonansea could have shot freely, but hesitated too long and was then blocked (33rd). Only shortly before the break did a “she-wolf” have a good chance in the penalty area, but Jill Roord’s shot at the outside instep was far too harmless (42nd).
Hendrich with own goal
Shortly after the restart, the VfL women are a bit more determined: Sara Doorsoun (49th) and Svenja Huth (50th) gave away. It was all the more bitter for the hosts that they fell behind. Lena Oberdorf threw the ball away, Bonansea crossed into the penalty area and Kathrin Hendrich steered the cross into her own goal (53rd).
No getting through against the defensive bulwark
The VfL attacks were now furious, but unreservedly more precise against the defensive bulwark of the guests. Despite clear field advantages, there was hardly any danger in front of the Turin goal. Doorsoun’s long-range shot, with which Peyraud-Magnin had little trouble, was Wolfsburg’s best opportunity since the 0: 1 (71st). With the exception of a good cross, which all VfL attackers flew past in the penalty area, the Bundesliga club no longer had a chance – on the contrary: Andrea Staskova put the lid on the game with 2-0 in stoppage time (90th + 3th) .
