Secours Catholique de Toulouse publishes the results of its “2021 Poverty Report” for the previous year and entitled “Hunger for Dignity”. It reveals that 76% of beneficiaries came to seek food aid.
“Behind the masks, the emergency has not disappeared. The pandemic has even highlighted the vulnerabilities of our society, ”explains Secours Catholique in a video summary of its 2021 Poverty Report, posted on YouTube.
In Toulouse, the volunteers of Ariège-Garonne Catholic Relief also take stock of the past year. Among the 9,500 people met in 2020, more than 76% came to ask for food aid. For its part, the “request to listen” has declined, but remains important, since 62% of beneficiaries are brought closer to Catholic relief for this reason. The share was 80% in 2019. “Requests for housing (energy, water, rent) always concern the third request expressed by 7% of beneficiaries”, details the association based in Toulouse.
Who are the beneficiaries ?
More than half of the people who requested help from Secours Catholique in 2020 are families, 29% of whom are single parents. This represents an increase of three points compared to last year. The number of single people is also on the rise over the past six years, reaching 42% today.
Almost two-thirds of the beneficiaries of the association’s services are between 25 and 49 years old. 30% are over 50 and 6% are under 25. The proportion of people who are unemployed or inactive continues to increase (57%). The average income of the people met by the volunteers being 618 euros per month.
Finally, “the people we met are 56% French. The rest are foreigners who come mainly from the Maghreb and Eastern European countries, ”concludes Secours Catholique de Toulouse.
