Rwanda’s envoy Gashumba presents identification in Sweden | New Times
Dr Diane Gashumba, Rwanda’s new ambassador to Sweden and the Nordic countries, presented her credentials to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on 16 November.
Gashumba was appointed ambassador to the Kingdom of Sweden in June this year. She has previously served as Minister of Health until her resignation in early 2020. Prior to that, she worked as Minister for Gender and Family Promotion.
During her meeting with King Gustaf, she shared the successful joint and interdisciplinary effort that has led to enormous progress in preventive measures, including vaccinations against Covid-19.
“Rwanda was able to limit enormous damage from the pandemic because of the trust between Rwandan communities, their leaders and researchers,” she added.
On that note, he stressed the importance of not overlooking the mental health of healthcare professionals during this challenging time.
Gashumba praised the contribution of partners such as us Swedish International Development Agency to improve the quality of higher education in Rwanda, especially scientific studies.
Over 100 Rwandan Ph.D. researchers have conducted studies in Sweden, as a result of the faculty’s exchange program.
She also said that Rwanda was keen to strengthen relations with Sweden, especially through trade and investment.
She added that discussions are underway to engage the Swedish private sector in the highest priorities such as vaccine production, green growth and trade as well as investments.
During the discussion on gender equality, Gashumba praised Sweden’s Queen Silvia’s work to protect the child’s right to a safe and loving childhood and work to improve the living conditions of children at risk of violence or sexual abuse.
Rwanda’s embassy in the Nordic region is accredited to Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland.
