If some cities are very popular for their Christmas markets, Dijon also loves traditions and is adorned with its most beautiful lights to welcome the end of the year celebrations.
There is an air of celebration that settles in the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy throughout the month of December. A real magic invades the city and it is a pleasure to walk in the illuminated Dijon streets. I assure you that these have the capacity to revive your child’s soul!
The 10 must-see places in Dijon at Christmas
1 • The huge Christmas tree
It is an 18-meter-high tree that you will discover at Place de la Liberation. No less than 361 trees (from a reasoned agricultural sector of the Morvan Natural and Regional Park) are arranged to be old only one … So incredible !
2 • The Carousel
The happiest will, of course, be our children when they will find, as every year, this beautiful carousel Place de la Liberation. Nothing better than a merry-go-round to enter into the magic of Christmas!
3 • The great wheel
Everyone (or almost) likes to take a ride on the Ferris wheel, Place de la République! It is a great opportunity to discover the city from above as well as the illuminations at nightfall. Promise you won’t get stuck at the top 😉
4 • The rink
Young and old alike can try their hand at ice skating and reveal their talents (or not) in figure skating or speed skating (be careful though) on the Place de la République. From theme nights are also organized!
5 • The sound and light show
You will greatly appreciate this show projected on the facades of the Palais des Ducs at nightfall! From December 18 to 24, these are 4 performances of about 10 minutes which are offered to you every evening in several slots: 6 p.m., 6.30 p.m., 7 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.
6 • The Little Train
Another beautiful sympathetic attraction for your little ones: this little train is never late for make eyes shine of your children!
7 • The Christmas Market
It has been for a few years a unmissable event end of year celebrations in Dijon. The chalets of the Christmas market will be scattered around Place Darcy, Place de la Liberation, Rue de la Liberté and Place de la République. The exhibitors offer you quality products: local products, local associations, artisans, designers …
8 • The descent of Santa Claus
It is certainly one of the oldest Christmas traditions has Dijon. Since 1951, Santa Claus goes down to the Place de la Liberation from the top of the Visit Philippe Le Bon December 24 at 6.30 p.m. A show that amazes children and intrigues the older ones!
9 • Stroll through the city
The Porte Guillaume, the Church of Notre-Dame, the rue Verrerie, the Place du Bareuzai and the Square des Ducs are also worth a look during your walk! Don’t miss it!
10 • Specialties: mulled wine & gingerbread
Whether in shops, in a café or directly on the Christmas market, do not miss the opportunity to taste the winter specialties, to offer yourself a little comfort and to warm up.
