Amsterdam continues to follow the most attractive residential city, Utrecht and Amstelveen
Amsterdam remains the most attractive city to live in, followed by Utrecht and Amstelveen. This is evident from the Atlas for Municipalities, which is published annually by the research agency Atlas Research. Residential attractiveness appears to correlate with unemployment rates and segregated residents.
The Atlas annually looks at the fifty largest municipalities and compares these over fifty indicators. Amsterdam leads the housing attractiveness index as it has been for years. This is a permanent theme in the book, and not only with regard to economic factors such as the supply of work, but also to universities, house prices and cultural facilities. Utrecht follows and comes closer to Amsterdam. Amstelveen is in third place. Emmen is listed for the tenth time.
The other permanent theme is the social position of the inhabitants of the municipalities. Based on this criterion, the problematic have shifted from last year. The list is led by Amersfoort, followed by Amstelveen and Utrecht.
The various indicators that the bureau places next to it point to a number of links of interest. In the least sizable cities, the exemption is very high. Emmen and Enschede are good examples of this. Utrecht and Amersfoort are on the right track with low unemployment figures. This relationship is not present in the large cities of Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam: they have a high residential attractiveness, but also high unemployment.
Also the level of education expressed in op. In Leiden, Delft and Nijmegen, low unemployment goes among the highly educated and high unemployment among the less educated. These cities are generally the most attractive, but less favorable for the low-skilled. These are university towns where low-skilled workers later become unemployed. One explanation for this is that temporary side jobs are done by students, according to the researchers.
A new indicator this year is the segregated population. What is striking is that there are quite a few more people living separately in the least cities, such as Heerlen, Sittard-Geleen and Lelystad. According to the researchers, this may indicate that these people are too expensive.
The Atlas annual for municipalities shows the positions for more recent reference year 2020.
