A turnaround in the Slovenian police when new legislation begins – EURACTIV.com
The police union has come out with accusations of “clean” after the end of the terms of all commanders and directors after the adoption of new legislation. The situation developed with warnings of increased political influence over the police, which the leadership rejects.
The Police Union of Slovenia (PSS) announced that the directors of internal police units and commanders of all police stations, a total of more than a hundred employees, had received resolutions that their mandate had ended in accordance with the new law.
It said these procedures are based on the new law, but mean “purge” and “open the door wide to political and other stakeholder interference” in policing, as the interior minister will have full discretion in setting requirements for everyone’s selection. publications.
The union said it would challenge some provisions of the new law in the Constitutional Court.
Police Commissioner Anton Olaj denied the allegations. “I deny allegations of politicization of the police, allusions to‘ personnel purges ’and simplistic claims of replacements throughout the police,” Olaj said.
He confirmed that the mandates of the commanders and directors had expired, but said they would all remain in the function of caretaker until the selection procedures are completed.
When the new law was passed in October, the opposition warned that it would politicize the police and threaten its independence.
