When spelling: Onex beats Olten
Personally
O like Olten ..? O like Onex!
Why, from Solothurn’s point of view, it doesn’t matter whether the spelling table is reformed.
A for Anna, for Niklaus or R for Rosa: If you want to spell a complicated N name or a difficult address on the phone or at the hotel reception, use distinctive passwords – for the sake of clarity. In German-speaking countries there are neatly standardized “dictation rules” for this. Now, in our large neighboring country, the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) has recently started reforming the spelling alphabet.
In the future, first names are to be replaced by the names of large cities – Friedrich by Frankfurt, Charlotte by Chemnitz and so on. The reform of DIN 5009 was suggested because it bears traces of the Nazi era and many names no longer seem entirely up-to-date anyway.
Do we also need a new spelling table with city names in this country? At least from Solothurn’s point of view, that can be quite a sniff. It is obvious that Grenchen would be outdone by Geneva in terms of population in the āGā. Solothurn would not only have to admit defeat to St. Gallen. But even Olten wouldn’t have a stab – the little Geneva town of Onex, which is unknown in our realms, has just a little more inhabitants. As a consolation, the three-fir city was once represented on the Gesamtn spelling table.
