Work on the avenue de Toulouse greenway and the cycle lane are starting this week and are intended to herald better consideration of pedestrians and cyclists.
The municipal program in favor of soft transport has been launched. This week starts the construction of the greenway avenue de Toulouse. On the ascending parts of the avenue, a cycle lane (on the avenue de Quercy side) and the famous greenway (on the Carrefour side) will emerge. “This is a project that we have set up in consultation with cycling associations and members of the accessibility commission”, Jean-Claude Carrié, first deputy mayor in charge of roads.
“It’s not just a simple cycle path because as soon as there are two gentle modes of travel, here for cyclists and pedestrians, we can speak of a greenway. The advantage on part of the road is that we have the right of way on the ground to do this work. Elsewhere, we favor the cycle lane as preferred by the associations of cyclists. It is a little symbolic, in particular so close to the COP26, of launch this project. This is perhaps the first founding act of concrete actions for the municipality of Villefranche. It is a concern of elected officials to draw up a global plan of soft transport in the municipality to try to mitigate the all- power of the car although it is, of course in rural areas, practically compulsory. possible. “
Concretely, the site will take place in two phases. The first part, which starts this week, will see the Eurovia company carry out earthworks and sewage networks on the section from the crossroads with avenue Cibiel to the roundabout on avenue du Quercy. The company Grégory – Spie Batignol then take over to carry out the asphalt work. If the weather conditions are favorable, this should be done before the holiday season.
The end of the work is estimated at the end of January
The second part, for its part, concerns the section which leads from the crossroads of avenue Cibiel to the roundabout which serves the Tricot. The same earthworks must be carried out in the direction of the ascent with a cycle path 1.5 meters wide separated from the road by a safety, and a border alley for pedestrians of the same width on the far right of the road. This section benefits from autonomous lighting thanks to the installation (by Eiffage Energie Systèmes) of 21 solar street lights. The end of the work is scheduled for the end of January.
The operation as a whole costs 249,720 euros excluding tax but benefits from various subsidies for the funder: 62,430 euros from the State, 62,430 euros from the Occitanie region, 18,082 euros from the West Aveyron community. Traffic continues to be carried out normally on avenue de Toulouse, but the speed will be limited to 30 km / h above. This project is the first in a series of actions in favor of soft travel that will see the light of day next year. Cycle lanes should come, in 2022, the town.
This avenue de Toulouse site will link the small section of the cycle path installed on the top of the avenue de Toulouse, at the roundabout which rests in particular on the avenue du Quercy. A cycle path which is only rarely used and which had been designed on the occasion of the construction of the roundabout. “We have seen with the associations of cyclists and this type of development is not in their favor because they generally prefer to stay on the road than to leave it and to risk, at the time of insertion, possible problems “, Specifies Jean-Claude Carrié.” We will probably think of a way to improve this. This is also true for the continuity of the green lane, between the roundabout serving the Tricot (at Carrefour level) and the roundabout between avenue Soulié and avenue des Croates. Changes will likely be made in the future. “
