Toulouse: why is your street called that way?
Thanks to documentary research, the Toulouse municipal archives offer city dwellers the opportunity to discover the history of the name of their street. About sixty streets deemed unusual have been listed on the Urban’Hist site.
The history of your street is revealed. On the website Urban’Hist, the Toulouse municipal archives offer residents the opportunity to discover the history of their street. “We received dozens of mails asking us for details on certain streets of the city, that motivated our project” details the assistant to the municipal archives of Toulouse, Gaëlle Mignot, in the columns of France Bleu Occitanie.
About sixty streets deemed unusual have been listed on the site, through the work of three historians as well as their documentary research. “There are a lot of fashions. The first names are linked to the use of the place, or are quite colorful. In the city center, the streets sometimes have the names of the professions mainly represented in the streets” reports Gaëlle Mignot.
The assistant reports a number of changes throughout history. “In the 19th century, we gave street names to personalities who marked the history of Toulouse or the country. And then some names came back, we tried several times to change the name of the Place des Carmes, but the custom stayed and we came back to the name of the Place des Carmes, ”she notes.
