The pupils of the primary schools of the Academy of Toulouse have regained their level of reading and mathematics before the health crisis, according to the results of national assessments published by the Ministry of National Education. However, the teachers’ unions assess that inequalities are deepened for students in difficulty.
Apparently, the undesirable effects of the health crisis on the level of students in CP, CE1 and 6e have completely disappeared, according to the statements of the Minister of National Education Jean-Michel Blanquer who commented on the results of the prior learning assessments carried out. at each start of the school year, in French and in mathematics. In 2020, in fact, the school noted “declining results”, a consequence of confinement.
Reading having become a “great national cause”, students entering preparatory course (CP) or elementary course first year (CE1) have, since 2018 and from the start of the school year, a standardized assessment on paper. Nationally, nearly 1.6 million students have been assessed in 33,000 public and private schools under contract.
“It is a question of proposing, from the beginning of the year, benchmarks allowing teachers to fully appreciate the achievements that anchor the learning, says the Ministry of National Education. They can thus identify the individual needs of each student. as quickly as possible and provide the most appropriate assistance “.
Levels above 2019
In the Toulouse academy, which brings together eight departments, “the students of CP have found levels of results equivalent to those of the start of the 2019 school year, or even higher,” notes the rectorate of Toulouse. And to detail:
“The level of CP students in 2021 is even higher than that of students in 2018, for example in letter recognition, the proportion of students mastering this area satisfactorily increases from 62.9% in 2018 to 66% in 2021 The level of writing numbers increased from 83.1% to 89.4%. “
It is the same for the pupils of CE1. “The students have returned to levels of results equivalent to those of the 2019 and 2018 school year, or even higher,” said the ministry. According to estimates, the number of students proficient in reading words aloud has “drop from 67.9% in 2019 to 73.8% in 2021”.
So much for the plebiscite of national education which is not necessarily shared by teachers in the field. “What the minister forgets to point out are the inequalities between the pupils of priority education and the others, estimates the co-secretary of Snuipp-FSU 31 Alexia Seguin. The duplication of classes in CP, CE1 and large nursery section does not These assessments did not all precede a worsening of inequalities that were even more reported last year. But this was already the case in 2019. “
Reading and comprehension level
For the majority union of the first degree, the abolition of devices such as the Rased (Network of specialized aid for pupils in difficulty) and “More teachers than classes” has not been favorable to the school climate in the schools of the priority education.
“We are used to saying that a class is a collective of learners and that we learn together, adds Alexia Seguin. students per class as students succeed. And then, all helpers outside of the class were welcomed. “
For Snuipp-FSU, “the big problem is the continuing training of teachers who have been canceled for all teachers in Haute-Garonne because it is impossible to replace them when they are absent”. Reading level is another, comprehension of the text is another. “We have students who read very well, but do not understand what they read,” notes the co-secretary of Snuipp-FSU.
