the Ginestous wastewater treatment plant inaugurates an anaerobic digestion and odor control unit
Energibio made its debut. This methanization unit was inaugurated at the Ginestous-Garonne wastewater treatment plant in Toulouse on Monday, November 15, 2021. According to the metropolis, “it is the largest producer of biomethane in France of this type”. She allows to sludge recycler from wastewater treatment for produce green gas. This transformation process is called anaerobic digestion. In detail, the sludge will be heated in order to degrade the organic matter and thus generate biogas.
Composed of 60% methane and 40% carbon dioxide, it is then purified to obtain biomethane. It is then controlled in the town gas network or used as biofuel. The volume of gas produced represents 50 million KW per year, i.e. the equivalent of the consumption of 11,000 inhabitants in heating and hot water or 230 buses per one in fuel According to Toulouse Métropole. Consequently, 10,000 tonnes of CO2 avoided per year. In addition, the volume of sludge to be treated by the wastewater treatment plant should be reduced by half.
Anti-odor virtues
Energibio is part of the Territorial Climate Energy Plan of the metropolis. This anaerobic digestion unit is also closely linked to the Zero Odor Plan. It effectively reduces odor nuisance thanks to the closure of the very odorous mud composting platform. Estimated at 3.75 million euros per year, lThe income generated by the sale of biogas will also help reduce odors.
Insulation of equipment emitting bad odors and an overall modernization of deodorization will in particular be carried out. In order to verify the effectiveness of these initiatives, Water Toulouse Metropole launched a casting to flush out a “nose jury” last October. Local residents can therefore assess the reduction in odors, at first glance. The odor control plan should be workforce in 2022.
