Sweden’s U21 coach Poya Asbaghi appointed Barnsley as coach
Barnsley have appointed Sweden’s U21 boss Poya Asbaghi as their new head coach after Markus Schopp left earlier in November.
The 36-year-old previously managed Dalkurd FF, Gefle IF and IFK Gothenburg before joining Sweden’s youth team.
Asbaghi replaces Schopp, who was fired after a victory in 15 league matches and seven straight losses.
“As we went through our recruitment process, it was clear that he will take us forward,” said CEO Khaled El-Ahmad.
“We want to thank you [caretaker manager] “Jo Laumann and the first team’s coaching staff for their continued hard work and professionalism in recent weeks during what has been a transition period for the club.”
Laumann has taken the lead for the Championship team on a temporary basis after Schopp’s departure and won his first match against Derby before Barnsley’s defeat against Hull before this month’s international break.
Iran-born Asbaghi watched 10 matches for Sweden U21, including Tuesday’s European Championship U21 qualifier against Ireland in Dublin.
Despite the fact that that match ended in a loss – Sweden’s first in seven matches during the qualifiers – Asbaghi goes with the side top in group F.
Laumann will be responsible for Saturday’s championship match against informed Fulham, while Asbaghi and his assistant Ferran Sibila will take responsibility from Monday.
Asbaghi will be Barnsley’s fifth permanent head coach in just over two years, after Daniel Stendel, Gerhard Struber, Valerien Ismael and Schopp.
