The Belgian national women’s padel team qualified for the quarter-finals of the world championships thanks to their 3-0 victory over the Netherlands on Wednesday in Doha, the capital of Qatar.
An-Sophie Mestach and Helena Wyckaert won the first point by beating Steffie Weterings and Marcella Koek 6-1, 6-2. Babette Wyckaert and Elyne Boeykens then dominated Milou Ettekoven and Tess Van Dinteren 6-3, 6-1, before Marie Maligo and Dorien Cuypers beat Chayenne Ewijk and Rosalie Van der Hoek 6-3, 6-4 to make 3-0 .
Belgium, 10th in the world rankings, began its round with a 3-0 defeat against Italy on Monday, and recorded a first victory on Tuesday against Denmark (3-0).
The Belgians are eliminated among the men. After a 3-0 victory over Qatar and a 3-0 loss to Brazil, Belgium beat Italy on Wednesday to finish one of the top two places in the group, qualifying for places 1-8. However, it was a 3-0 defeat that sealed this Belgian-Italian duel.
Nick Braet and Bram Coene were beaten 6-3, 6-0 by Andres Britos and Daniele Cattaneo. Jeremy Gala and Clement Geens then lost 7-6 (8/6), 6-3 to Simone Cremna and Marcelo Capitani. Laurent Montoisi and Jerome Peeters lost the 3rd match 6-1, 6-4 against Riccardo Sinicropi and Lorenzo di Giovanni.
The Belgian men’s team, 3rd in Group C, will now play the classification matches for places 9 to 16.
