On Tuesday, all the participants in the play-off matches of the 2022 World Cup European selection were determined. Immediately about the main thing: the first rival of the Russian national team will be one of these teams: Turkey, Poland, North Macedonia, Austria, Czech Republic. And if the Russians win in the semifinals, then the number of additional opponents will increase by five more teams. Here they are: Portugal, Scotland, Italy, Sweden, Wales. Even in the play-offs, Ukraine made its way, but Russia will be divorced with it in the draw.
Now let’s take a closer look at everything. First, once again, let’s recall the format of the joints.
- 12 teams qualified for the play-offs. Of these, 10 are national teams that finished second in their qualifying groups, two more are from the League of Nations. All of them will compete for 3 tickets to the 2022 World Cup.
- The draw will take place in Zurich on November 26 at 19:00 Moscow time. 12 teams will be split into 6 semi-final pairs. The winners of the semi-finals in the three final matches will compete for three tickets to the World Cup.
- The draw will take place taking into account the seeding. The top six teams from the runners-up in the qualifying groups were seeded, the rest (four four from the League of Nations) were unseeded.
- During the draw, each team recognizes not only the opponent in the semifinals, but also attracts opponents in the final. That is, three mini-tournaments will be formed from the semi-finals and the final.
- The semi-finals will take place on March 24, 2022 on the seeded teams, the finals on March 29. The hosts are decisive for the additional three draws.

Finally, all the participants of the seams were determined 16 when the last matches were played in groups D, E and G.
In Group D, Finland and Ukraine fought for a place in the playoffs. The Finns, before the last round, were two points ahead of the Ukrainians, lost to France (0: 2). Ukraine used its chance, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina on the road (2: 0). As a result – the second place in the group and hitting the joints.
In group G, three teams could take second place at once – the Netherlands, Turkey and Norway. In the last round, the Netherlands defeated the Norwegians (2: 0), retained the first place and won a direct ticket to the 2022 World Cup. Turkey went to the joints, beating Montenegro (2: 1).
In group E it was known in advance that Wales and the Czech Republic would be at the junctions. Whoever finished third made the playoffs from the League of Nations. The third was the Czech Republic. But Wales scored an important point in the match with Belgium (1: 1). This could become one of the seeded teams for the Welsh.
We still have to analyze the strength of the rivals of the Russian national team in the semifinals. But simply ours will not be in any case.
