Poverty – Hanover – social associations warn: Poverty intensifies in a pandemic society
Hanover (dpa / lni) – Several social associations have warned against worsening poverty in Lower Saxony as a result of the corona pandemic. Before the virus, everyone is not the same, whoever is poor is even poorer in the crisis, said the State Poverty Conference in the run-up to the symposium “Poverty, Corona and the Consequences. Are you out of the crisis in solidarity?” (Tuesday, from 10.30 a.m.) with. But there are “economic and political alternatives that make a fairer society possible”. A joint declaration with demands on the crisis situation should be presented at the symposium.
The state conference had previously called for the fight against poverty in Lower Saxony to be stopped at short notice. In all regions, the divide between rich and poor worsened during the corona crisis, said managing director Klaus-Dieter Gleitze. The State Poverty Conference calls for the strengthening of communal and cooperative housing as well as discounted local transport.
The symposium is a joint event by the national poverty conference, the homeless magazine “Asphalt”, the AWO, Caritas, the DGB, DRK and the Diakonie as well as the refugee council, the self-advocacy of the homeless and the Verdi union.
