Possible assistance to Russia in the ongoing conflict in Armenia named: Society: Russia: Lenta.ru
Military expert and historian Ivan Konovalov admitted the possibility that Russia is providing Armenia with military-diplomatic support. In a conversation with “Lenta.ru” he noted that Moscow has accumulated quite a lot of experience in dealing with conflicts in the Caucasus, the situation will be quickly resolved.
On November 16, Yerevan addressed Moscow with an appeal to protect the territorial integrity of the system in accordance with the previously concluded bilateral agreement between the countries. Armenian Security Council Secretary Armen Grigoryan recalled the Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, which was concluded in 1997 by the then President of Russia and Armenia Boris Yeltsin and Levon Ter-Petrosyan. According to him, the country’s authorities are currently preparing an appeal to Moscow based on the named document.
One way or another, Russia will be involved in resolving the situation in Armenia, Konovalov said. The question is what kind of assistance Moscow will provide in response to Yerevan’s request, he added.
“The request from the Armenian side for help itself is not specific. Russia will obviously provide this assistance. It can be military, diplomatic and military-diplomatic, but since Russia always chooses a military-diplomatic approach in such a difficult region, it is obvious that this time it will also choose this option. Russia, of course, will not release the brakes on this situation, and it will be resolved, ”said Konovalov.
He added that the situation in the Caucasus has worsened since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Then Russia took on the role of arbiter and since then has accumulated enough experience to resolve such conflicts.
“All Russia’s actions in this direction, even with sharp criticism from the West, do not raise any questions from anyone. When the disaster in Karabakh was actually stopped last year, it was unprofitable thanks to this. Here, it will not work to untie the Gordian knot with a blow of the sword. This is not an approach. Naturally, Russia will take an active part in all this, but it will do it competently, ”the military expert noted.
In mid-November, the situation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border became aggravated again. On November 14, the Armenian Ministry of Defense announced an intense firefight between the military of the two countries, which was caused by an attempt by Azerbaijanis to launch an offensive on the eastern section of the border.
On November 16, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry reported that the Armenian military attacked Azerbaijani posts in the Kelbajar and Lachin regions of the republic. It was noted that as a result, two Azerbaijani soldiers were injured.
