Kawi orangutan cub celebrates in Prague Zoo: IT’S YEAR!
In a year, Kawi has made great strides. It begins to become independent. He grows more teeth, tastes more and more adult food. “She prefers sweet fruit. We give orangutans rather exotic, for example papaya, avocado, mango, they like figs a lot, “says the head primate Martin Vojáček. And so, on Kawi’s birthday, the family got sweet puzzles. “They were plastic pipes with drilled holes so that twigs of taste could be inserted into them. We put our favorite fruit inside, “describes the breeder.
The orangutans had to find out that the twigs, which are also for them to eat, had to be pulled out, and then the fruits were picked out. Kawi is also starting to train one of the important skills of orangutans, namely nest building. “It simply came to our notice then. He cups the tree, tries to lie down in it, “adds Vojáček. The breeders therefore gave him one nest as a second gift. But his mother immediately confiscated it. “It does not matter. Within six to seven years, Kawi will still be sleeping in the same nest with her, ”explains the breeder.
Meeting in the sunshine
The Indonesian jungle, in which orangutans live in the Prague Zoo, is currently closed due to reconstruction, but in sunny weather, visitors can still see Kawi and his family in the outdoor enclosure.
How he got his name
Kawi’s full name is Pustakawan, which means librarian in Indonesian. The name refers to the famous fantasy writer Terry Pratchet, who visited the Prague Zoo more than 20 years ago and was also involved in protecting orangutans. In his work The Earth, the character of a librarian orangutan appears.
