gel voican voiculescu, dear dumitriu

Death silenced a voice that mattered, although it had withstood the relentless virus for almost five weeks, Dragoș DUMITIRU died suddenly, unexpectedly.

BUCHAREST, Nov. 16 – Sputnik. The departure between us of the journalist and the former deputy Dragoș Dumitriu continues to have echoes.

Gelu Voican Voiculescu wrote, on this occasion, an emotional text, in which he talks about how he met Dragoș Dumitriu and about the things that united them, but also separated them.

We reproduce below, in full, the text of Gelu Voican Voiculescu, as published on inprimalinie.org.

In memory of Dragoș DUMITIRU

Death silenced a voice that mattered, though it had withstood the relentless virus for nearly five weeks. Dragoș DUMITIRU died suddenly, unexpectedly.

We had met earlier, when he organized all kinds of daring events at that time – for example, the symposium dedicated to Jean Pârvulescu, an unusual figure of Romanian emigration. But now we often quote his articles and editorials.

We do not share certain options, but out of respect for the main opinion, we avoid expressing my total disagreement with Ceaușescu’s apologetic attitude, especially subscribing to his time, out of an unwavering patriotic conviction. I admired the courage of his singular position, against the current, but

A journalist demands decency from those who attack Dragoș Dumitriu even after his death

However, his undeniable humanity made sure that this major divergence between us did not affect our personal relationship. In turn, I also avoided any reference to this topic that places us on irreconcilable positions. With his unexpected death, all these contradictory opinions instantly volatilized, leaving a pious forgetfulness on this subject.

All the objections I made in endless imaginary conversations were completely erased. This whole dialogue, animated by a continuous fierce controversy in his mind, has disappeared as if by itself…

Dragoș Dumitriu - Sputnik Moldova-Romania, 1920, 14.11.2021

Dragoș Dumitriu’s nationalism: royalty and communism, Regina Maria, Ceaușescu, Vadim

It stayed for me the man as such with its indisputable qualities:

– devoid of spiritual Caesarism, he had refused his pride homo itself (defined by Erasmus), not pursuing glory, above all;

– through a perpetual cognitive effort, he always wanted to remove the walls that limit the human spirit;

– convinced of his noble intellectual descent, he was proud to be part of the laborious human race, glorifying the excellence of knowledge;

– dominated by a sense of the concrete, avoiding the abstract trap and sterile speculations that lead to analytical aridity, he was a conscious witness of the time.

Kidnapped among us in full creative activity, Dragoș DUMITIRU deserves as an epitaph: Excelsior!
