AMCA MONACO – As part of the 2021/2022 season “Art at the time of Prince Albert 1st” and as part of the celebrations of the centenary of Prince Albert 1st in 2022, L’AMCA (Monegasque association for knowledge of the arts) is pleased to welcome Marianne Mathieu, Scientific Director at the Marmottan Monet Museum in Paris, who will speak about Monet’s encounter with the Côte d’Azur.
In the 19th century, an aristocratic society discovered the attractions of the Riviera which, over time, became a vacation spot more and more popular with many artists. After a first stay on the shores of the Mediterranean with Renoir in December 1883, Monet, enthusiastic about the landscape, returned there alone for three months in January 1884 and settled in Liguria, in Bordighera then in Menton. He produced forty canvases of landscapes that he described in his letters as magical. Sensitive to the genius of the place, he immediately expresses the splendor, new to him, of southern nature. The curvilinear rhythm of the abundant vegetation, in winter, exalts the vibration of the atmosphere. Through the flexible entanglement of nature, most of his paintings plunge towards the blue sea. Monet shows a vigorous chromaticism in accordance with the object, which refutes the accusation sometimes made of a bias towards clarity. The strongly colored canvases that he later executed in 1888 in Cap-Martin, Antibes and Juan-les-Pins go in the same direction: it is a new example of the perfect objectivity of his vision, in resonance with the specific character of the country.
